Dr Jeffrey Fisher, MD, as quoted in his book ‘The Chromium Program’, noted that “Chromium, if used properly can help to form muscles and reduce fat, in addition to significantly contributing to the reduction of cholesterol and to control the metabolism of blood sugar.”

On the other hand, Chromium picolinate, a Chromium based compound that was developed by the Human Nutrition Research Laboratory have been found to also contain incredible therapeutic properties.

As Insulin is known to be an extremely important hormone that regulates the the metabolism carbohydrates, fats and proteins, Chromium is considered as essential co-factor.

According to the Nigerian Academy of Science, a daily intake of 50 to 200 micrograms of this mineral is needed for an adequate diet.

This is as a result of the fact that exercise and a high consumption of sugar increase the body need for Chromium.

Also, the lack of this mineral in many diet can bring about problems related to weight control, energy, vigor and muscular development.

Furthermore, it is essentially needed by insulin for its proper operation to assure that sugar does not accumulate in the blood and is properly utilised within the cell so as to prevent a case of diabetics.

Dr Fisher has therefore recommended the intake of ‘Chromium picolinate’ as the most adequate form of this element so as to increase the activity of insulin in the body.

In addition to these, it was found that both minerals play an imperative role in passing dissolved protein from the blood to the cells in an efficient manner.

However, Insulin and Chromium do not only ensure the rapid absorption of sugar by the blood, they also help in the rapid conversion of it into glycogen which is stored away for future use.

The efficient absorption of sugar in the blood through the intake of Chromium contributes to a person’s energy, vigour and resistance.
